Founded in 1894, the Civic Federation is an independent, non-partisan government research organization that provides objective analysis and recommendations on government finance issues for the Chicago region and State of Illinois
The Civic Federation is a 501(c)(3) non-partisan, non-profit government research organization working to maximize the quality and cost-effectiveness of government services in the Chicago region and the State of Illinois. The Federation publishes reports and commentary about state and local government tax policies, government services and public expenditures. The Federation’s membership includes business and professional leaders from a wide range of Chicago-area companies and institutions.
The Civic Federation has been building out its internal development department in recent years. To support and expand ongoing development efforts, the Federation is administering a 9-12 month paid apprenticeship, focused on the implementation of the Federation’s development work plan.
Position Title: Development Apprentice
The Development Apprentice will work primarily with the Director of Development to support, expand and implement the development strategy for the Civic Federation. The primary duties for the Apprentice include: researching prospective foundation partners and members; database management; and preparing development reports and materials for presentations and meetings. The Apprentice will additionally provide event and administrative support as directed by the Director of Development.
- Research foundation support opportunities
- Draft foundation grant proposals, applications and reports
- Research candidates for new membership
- Prepare materials for prospective foundation and member meetings
- Provide database management support (clean existing data, enter new data, pull reports, etc.)
- Prepare development reports and materials for presentations and meetings (metrics on member engagement, demographics and new membership, multi-year member analysis, etc.)
- Work collaboratively with other staff on event and administrative projects as directed by the Director of Development
- Occasionally work outside the standard 9-5 office hours for special circumstances (annual events, grant deadlines, etc.)
The ideal candidate will be a graduate student, young professional or an individual seeking a career in non-profits, fundraising, development, organizational administration or constituent engagement. Excellent writing and communication skills, attention to detail and organization are required. Ability to take initiative and work independently and collaboratively is preferred. Knowledge of data analytics, CRMs (Donor Perfect) and other online and digital platforms such as Adobe, Canva and Google Suite is advantageous.
This is an hourly paid position. Hours will range 20-30 per week, depending on development needs and the Development Apprentice’s schedule.
