The south portion of Cook County includes the following nine Townships: Bloom, Bremen, Calumet, Lemont, Orland, Palos, Rich, Thornton and Worth. The report does not include the research information on the Township of Calumet because it does not contain any unincorporated residents.
The west portion of Cook County includes the following nine Townships: Cicero, Leyden, Lyons, Norwood Park, Oak Park, Proviso, River Forest, Riverside and Stickney. Six of these townships have unincorporated areas. The exceptions are Cicero, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, which are coterminous with a municipal government.
Cook County will likely continue to provide municipal-type services to unincorporated areas of Cook County for many years to come. However, it should develop and formally adopt a multi-year plan to eventually eliminate all unincorporated areas.
As part of the Civic Federation's report, Unincorporated Cook County: A Profile of Unincorporated Areas in Cook County and Recommendations to Facilitate Incorporation, profiles of the unincorporated areas in Cook County's North, West and South regions were compiled. Understanding more about the unique characteristics of these areas will help County and municipal officials, as well as unincorporated residents, develop plans to incorporate.
Each year the Civic Federation recognizes and pays collective tribute to the outstanding civic contributions of individual citizens and Chicago-area institutions at our Civic Awards Luncheon. The awards are given annually to Chicagoans and Chicago-area businesses that best exemplify the vision of civic involvement espoused by the Civic Federation founders for whom the awards are named.
